Seniors and downsizes, fear no more! Why downsizing is the BEST option | Surrey REALTOR® tells all

So you or maybe your parents have been thinking about downsizing for forever. The current family home has been around for a long time and it just doesn't make sense anymore to have a house that big. The problem with downsizing is you're scared, you've got too much stuff, you hate the idea of strata, you want to bring the kids over and the family over for dinner, and you're worried that you're going to be too picky about the next home and you might not find exactly what you're looking for. If this sounds like you, this video today is going to be right up your alley and help you figure out exactly if downsizing is right for you.

Let's get into it. You've been thinking about downsizing probably for a long time. You've been in the current home forever and you want to have a place that's big enough to call home, still have the family over, and something that's going to make you happy at the end of the day. Now, while there is some of the things about downsizing that a lot of times people just need to be comfortable with, there are some major benefits of downsizing that you may not be aware of, and those are exactly what I want to share with you today.

One of the best things about downsizing your property, especially if you're in something like a detached home where it requires a lot of maintenance and yard work and upkeep is, your life is instantly going to become a lot easier. Downsizing your home can eliminate a lot of things like exterior maintenance or cleaning rooms unnecessarily, ones that you probably don't go in that often anyway. So many times we see people downsize from a home that has a big dining room in it as an example where they only have the family over maybe once or twice a year to eat dinner there. People like that have just made the decision that it's time for their kids to host the family dinners rather than theirs or they find another place that will accommodate for a large dining room table. The 2nd benefit that if you're watching this, you are absolutely going to love is paying less in property tax.

There is likely no need for you to carry this big home in Surrey or surrounding areas and pay all the property taxes that come along with having a more expensive home. When you downsize, thus getting into likely a less expensive property, your property taxes will also come down and that really just frees up more money for fun stuff. And guess what you guys? The 3rd thing that's really great is that's not the only way you're going to save money. You're also going to save money on things like heating and electric bills. If you're like so many other would be downsizers out there.

Your current property is just way too big for your needs and you're heating, electrifying and cleaning a home in rooms that you don't even use. The 4th thing we see a lot of downsizers really enjoy is if they do choose to go into a strategy property like a Condor or townhome, this really frees up their time. Since you don't have to worry about all the upkeep and whatnot we talked about earlier, you can do fun things like go away for long weekends or longer periods of time on vacation and not have to worry about the maintenance of your property. Part of downsizing also comes with increasing and improving your quality of life. So this is something that you definitely want to get excited about.

And the last and probably greatest reason to downsize is either finally getting rid of that mortgage that you've had for so long, or if you don't have a mortgage, freeing up some cash. You could use that extra money to put towards a rental property, or you could use it for other things like vacations, giving to your kids, investing in the stock market. There are so many options to do with that extra cash and it doesn't just have to sit dormant in a bank account. Whatever you decide to do with it is up to you, but it's better spent by you and you know best. There are some incredible benefits to downsizing and when the time is right, they certainly outweigh what the concerns that most people have are. If you live in Surrey, BC or surrounding areas and have been thinking about downsizing, be sure to download that crazy market playbook because you're going to love the information on there and how comfortable it's going to make you with the process.

Downsizing your home can be super rewarding and it's likely something you've been thinking about for a while. I hope this quick video gave you a little bit of value.
