Why I’ll never live in Surrey, BC (or would I?)

Today, we’re diving into some controversial topics about Surrey, B.C. Over the years, I’ve encountered plenty of opinions—both good and bad—about this city. While it’s not perfect, it’s also not the chaotic place some claim it to be. As someone who’s lived here, worked here, and helped countless people relocate here, I want to set the record straight. Let’s debunk some of the most common myths about Surrey.

I’ll never live in Surrey BC

Is Crime Really Out of Control in Surrey?

One of the most persistent stereotypes is that Surrey is crime-ridden. Yes, you may see headlines, but let’s put it into perspective. According to CanadaCrimeIndex.com, Surrey is listed among the dangerous communities in Canada—but so are other large cities like Vancouver, Abbotsford, and Burnaby. Crime is not unique to Surrey; it’s a challenge for the entire Lower Mainland.
When you compare Surrey’s crime statistics to other nearby cities, the difference isn’t as drastic as people make it out to be. Sure, crime happens here, but it happens everywhere. Let’s not let fear outweigh the reality.
There’s Nothing to Do in Surrey—Really?
This one always gets me. People often say, “There’s nothing to do in Surrey,” but that couldn’t be further from the truth. Surrey is called the “City of Parks” for a reason, with places like Bear Creek Park and Sunnyside Acres offering beautiful outdoor spaces. Plus, we’ve got Guilford Town Centre—BC’s third-largest mall—packed with over 250 stores.
While Vancouver may have the iconic Stanley Park and a world-class reputation, Surrey holds its own when it comes to things to do. It’s just a quick drive to other attractions in the Lower Mainland, so you’re never far from anything.
Homelessness and Drugs Are a Major Issue—But Not Just Here

I get it; homelessness and drug use are sensitive topics, and they exist in Surrey, but they’re not exclusive to this city. In fact, compared to Vancouver, Surrey has fewer homeless people per capita. According to the 2021 census, Vancouver has 7.2 homeless people for every 1,000 residents, while Surrey has 1.8 homeless people for every 1,000 residents.
As for the drug problem, Surrey isn’t even the top region for unregulated drug deaths. Northern Health and Vancouver Coastal Health top that list, so let’s not single Surrey out unfairly. The entire Lower Mainland is grappling with these issues.
Overcrowding in Surrey Schools—A Real Issue

It’s true—Surrey is growing fast, and with that comes some strain on infrastructure, particularly schools. About 83% of Surrey’s 124 schools are over capacity. But guess what? Vancouver is facing the opposite issue—school closures due to under-enrollment. The problem isn’t Surrey alone; it’s happening across the region.
Embracing Diversity: Surrey’s True Strength

Let’s address the elephant in the room. Surrey is a diverse place, and yes, more than half of the population speaks a non-official language at home. But that’s not a problem—it’s an opportunity. Diversity enriches our communities and makes them more dynamic and inclusive. So if you’re someone who sees this as a downside, I challenge you to rethink what makes a community thrive.
Conclusion: Surrey is Awesome!
At the end of the day, Surrey has its challenges, like any city, but it’s also full of opportunities and growth. It’s a place where my family and I live, and it’s home to many wonderful people. If you’re considering moving here, don’t let the myths scare you away. Surrey is an incredible place to call home.
